October is Mental Health Awareness month. We need to take care of our mental health and wellbeing. For some this might mean taking appropriate measures to manage a mental illness. But for many of us this means engaging in activities that help us to maintain our mental health and wellness.
This is what self-care is all about. What do we need to do to ensure we are looking after ourselves. When we are feeling well we are better able to participate in other activities that might include work, play and other responsibilities.
This article is an easy read about how we might be able to rethink self-care and it’s value in our own lives. The article is from 2017, but the points made are always valid.
Why self-care is vital to our mental wellbeing
I engage in a variety of activities to enhance my mental wellbeing. One of the key things I do is to ride my bike. There are a number of benefits I get from cycling; these include psychological and physical benefits, social interactions, an opportunity to be outside in nature as well as a great opportunity to explore mindfulness of action.
